IBM Opens Development Laboratory in the Centre of Manchester

13 May 2010

IBM today announced the official opening of a new systems software development laboratory in Manchester. With a focus on IBM’s Power systems, the engineers in the Lab develop optimization, security, and virtualisation software for enabling clients to manage emerging workloads and reduce data center costs.

The opening will be live streamed at 11.30am on 13 May at http://www.livestream.com/ibmuk
(you can also view the stream post event) see Cathy Garner talking about how innovation can transform cities. She will be joining Susan Jaworski, Director, IBM System Software Development, UK, Rod Adkins, Senior Vice President, IBM Systems & Technology Group and Johnathan Fellows from Daresbury Laboratory who will be discussing how the work of the Lab will make a difference, and the importance of developing smarter systems for a smarter planet.
Today’s announcement is the latest in a series of major investments in IBM’s high-end systems in 2010.

Dr Garner commented “By the year 2050, it is estimated that more than 70% of the world’s population will live in urban areas. The pressure this brings means that cities must become smarter in adopting new technologies and knowledge to address the challenges we face. Manchester’s rich innovation pedigree and ambition for the future makes it an exciting place to trailblaze new approaches to urban futures. We’re delighted to be working in collaboration with IBM to help deliver smarter ways of living and working in Manchester."

The IBM Lab has its origins in Transitive, a spin-out company from the University of Manchester, aquired by IBM in 2009.
